A Great Way to Soothe Your Baby

There are many ways to soothe a crying baby. However, I would like to share some of the things I learned along the way when raising my own children. I have also learned a few new things since watching my grandson. There are so many items available now-a-days that you can use to entertain and soothe your baby. Back in the day, we had crank-up baby swings. Now, we have electric baby rockers that do so much more. This is an awesome way to rock your baby to sleep for a nap and for you to take a break.

When your baby is fussing or crying, you will want to go over this simple checklist of things to consider of possible reasons for the fussiness.

First things first – feeding time

When your baby is crying or fussing, you should have a checklist either in your mind or on paper, of the things to rule out for the reasons he or she is crying. First, is it time for your little one’s feeding? If your baby is bottle fed, the rule of thumb is they eat about every 4 hours. If breast fed they eat about every 2 hours. Signs that your baby may be hungry include putting fists in his mouth or turning his head to the side with his mouth open looking for a bottle. Or, your baby may be smacking his lips. Keep track of when he last fed and you will have a good idea when it’s time to feed him. After the feeding, make sure your baby burps well before laying him down.

Second on the list

If your baby has already eaten, been burped, diaper changed and he is still fussing, you will want to see if maybe he is too warm or too cold. Is the temperature of the house on the warm side? You will want to dress him lightly. Is your house on the cool side, swaddle him in a receiving blanket. You get the idea, make sure he is comfortable. Dress the baby as you would dress for the temperature of the house.

If your baby is vomiting after feeding, has excessive spitting up and is losing or not gaining weight, you should call your pediatrician’s office and schedule him to be seen. It could be a type of gastric reflux which could easily be mistaken for colic (gas pains).

Feel your baby’s head, does he feel warm? Take his temperature. If your baby is younger than 2 months and has a fever, call your child’s doctor right away. Here is a general idea for baby’s temperature: The following are considered normal, while higher readings indicate fever.

  • Rectal reading of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or less
  • Oral reading of 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37.2 degrees Celsius) or less

If your baby is sick such as with a cold or other sickness, that will definitely make him out of sorts and in such cases, follow your pediatrician’s advice.

Third on list of things to rule out

Believe it or not, your little one can be fussy simply due to boredom! So here are a few ideas.

  • Take your baby for a walk. Put him in the stroller and if it is warm weather outside, go around the block a few times. It works like a charm! Before you know it, baby will be sleeping! Babies love the fresh air and it does make them sleepy. You can still walk them around your house in the stroller too! I have found that it works just as well.
  • Pick your baby up and sing to him softly as you gently rock him in your arms. Your voice is soothing to baby and being in your arms makes them feel secure.

4moms mamaRoo electric baby rocker

Put your little one in the baby swing, set the speed to slow and watch him slowly fall asleep. I have used the 4moms mamaRoo electric baby rocker for my own grandchild and I absolutely loved it! It has 5 different motions and speeds, it is Bluetooth enabled which controls motions and sound, and has 4 built-in sounds & a MP3 plug-in. This electric baby rocker also has an adjustable reclining seat. So if you are using this for entertainment, put the seat upward and if for napping, recline it back. The weight range is from birth to 25lbs (or when baby can sit up unassisted).

A few drawbacks

The colorful balls on the top do not rotate at all. But keep in mind this is not a mobile. It is there for your baby to look at and to swing at with his hands. The bright colored balls will draw your little one’s attention. They are reversible too. Flip them over for the black and white colors.

This baby rocker is electric and it is pretty big. So when you set it up, pick a spot that will work well for you. You do not want to have to move it around and you will need to be close to an electrical outlet.

More pros than cons

This is the best electric baby rocker that I have seen on the market. Most hospitals use it in their nurseries too. In my opinion, every nursery should have this. It is a great way to soothe your baby. Please keep in mind that this should never be used for sleeping through the night. You should always be very near when your baby is in the rocker.

The pros far outweigh the cons for this baby rocker. It has so many great features including the Bluetooth feature as you can choose what music you want to play and you can control the settings for the motions.

I have attached a link for you if this electric baby rocker interests you. Please see below – purchase yours here!

  1. Wow, it has been a long time since I’ve used a baby rocker, but it never failed to work like a charm to soothe the little ones. They are magical little devices! I had no idea that they had become so high tech now though — I could definitely see where having bluetooth access to the controls could be helpful. Thank you for sharing this cool product!
