In my prior post, Communication Board for Children with CP (Cerebral Palsy), I spoke about the 5 types of CP. For this article I want to go into a little more detail on the most severe form – spastic quadriplegia CP and discuss treatment options – therapies and home care. Spastic quadriplegia CP means that both arms and legs are affected along with the torso (trunk) and face. Seizures are typically involved as well as trouble speaking. Also, I will be telling you about a mechanical lift that you will need for caring for your child with this form of cerebral palsy and explain the question “What is a Hoyer patient lift?”

Spastic quadriplegia CP

Spastic quadriplegia is the most severe and serious form of CP and causes the loss of use of the whole body. This is because more of the brain is affected due to extensive brain damage or congenital malformations (abnormal brain development in utero) which in turn causes the most complications. These complications include but are not limited to:

Inability to walk
Speech is profoundly affected
Swallowing is impaired
Floppy neck (no control)
Seizures
Moderate to severe learning disabilities
Communication difficulties

In addition, the pull of spastic muscles on the bones can cause severe problems. Children with this type of CP are especially prone to scoliosis which is a curvature of the spine or a back deformity.

Treatment options

There will be a team of health care professionals – pediatrician, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, neurologist (a medical doctor who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating diseases that affect the nervous system which includes the brain, spinal cord and all other nerves throughout the body), speech/swallow therapist – who will work closely with the child and parents. There will be ongoing treatment plans and therapy sessions required for maximum, possible comfort and quality of life for this child.

Two of the most important goals are for comfort of the child and increasing mobility. These children almost always require surgery to correct joint dislocations and shortened muscles. Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) is a common surgery associated with children who have spastic cerebral palsy. This is a surgical treatment on the lower spinal cord to treat spasticity.

Physical therapy plays a big role in caring for these children. The goal is to provide as much independence as possible and focuses on flexibility exercises to help stretch out stiff muscles. Exercise programs will be tailored to each child’s needs and taught to caregivers to maintain these exercises at home.

Part of the daily exercise regimen will include range-of-motion (ROM) and stretching exercises to improve joint mobility and to help keep the muscles and tendons as soft as possible. Engaging in regular exercise can help improve motor function.

Occupational therapy is used to help the child’s ability to perform daily tasks such as brushing their teeth, combing their hair and other daily activities. It will help them at school too. This therapy also centers on anything that needs to be done with the hands.

Speech therapy is another important therapy as it is used to strengthen the muscles of the mouth used for speech which helps with articulation and coordination. Some children may experience difficulty swallowing with associated drooling. The speech therapist also evaluates the swallowing reflex and determines if there is a problem with difficulty swallowing food or drink.

Regarding the speech difficulties, the speech therapist will use a communication device with the child. The child will learn to use this device and it will not only build the child’s confidence, but it will improve motor and cognitive abilities, (the ability of the brain to process, retrieve, and store information). Caring for a chlld with spastic quadriplegia CP at home

As a parent or caregiver for a child with this form of CP, life can feel overwhelming at times. First, I want to say to you, do not hesitate to ask for help. Taking care of this special needs child is a 24/7 routine and it is okay to have help. Second, it is vitally important to have the tools you need especially as the child grows up. He will be getting larger and you will need to be able to properly lift him from bed to chair, chair to bed, etc.

Ask your doctor or nurse about a local support group that you can attend. There, you will meet other people who are dealing with the same things and you will not feel alone. It is amazing what these support groups can do for your mental well-being.

What is a Hoyer lift (patient lift)?

A Hoyer lift is a brand name for “patient lift.” It is an electronic crane designed to transfer a person from bed to wheel chair, commode or bath chair and transfer back. Nurses use these in hospitals and there are Hoyer lifts designed for use at home. The Hoyer lift or patient lift can be used by one person so if you are at home with no one else to help you, it will be no problem transferring your loved one from the bed to the chair with this lift.

How do I use a patient lift?

I will give you a guided tour of how to move a patient from the bed to the wheelchair using a patient lift.

First, take the body sling and fold it in half with the smooth side on the inside. Roll the patient on his side and tuck the sling underneath his back. Then, go to the other side of the bed and roll the patient over the sling onto his other side and then pull the other half of the sling out. The sling should now be flat on the bed under the patient and then roll the patient on his back.

Next, bring the inside leg straps of the sling up and bring the outside straps up over the outside of his legs. You want the straps to be mid-thigh for the most comfortable transfer. Then cross the leg straps bringing one set of straps through the other – like an “X”.

You are now ready to attach the patient lift. Bring the lift to the bed. Lower the sling attachment bar and attach the leg straps in an “X” fashion to the attachment bar. Then attach the shoulder straps to the attachment bar.

With one arm under the patient’s legs and the other hand on the lift controls, gently raise the patient using the controls and pivot around to just above the wheel chair or regular chair and then slowly lower the patient down to the chair.

When the patient is in the chair, detach the shoulder and leg straps. Then, lean the patient to one side and roll the sling under the patient. Go to the other side of the patient, lean the patient the opposite way and lift the sling out from under the patient.

Conclusion and final thoughts

All children with spastic quadriplegia CP deserve to have the highest quality of life possible and they deserve all our love. They are precious children and with all the treatments available for them we can certainly do our best to keep them as comfortable and happy as possible.

You as the parent or caregiver also deserve to be as happy and need to look out for your own well-being. Taking care of a special needs child is no easy task and can be both physically and mentally draining. That is why it is important you have the necessary tools you need to make your care giving as easy and safe as can be.

Communication Board for Children

Approximately 8,000 babies in the United States are diagnosed with CP (cerebral palsy) each year. What exactly is CP you might ask? In this article I will address CP, what it is, how it’s diagnosed, how it’s treated and recommended assistive equipment for cognitive function and communication. I will introduce you to an assistive device known as a communication board which will help your child learn and communicate with others.

What is cerebral palsy (CP)?

Cerebral palsy is a disorder of posture and movement (difficulty in controlling the muscles) due to damage or injury to the brain. This brain damage can happen before, during or after birth. The area of the brain that has been injured determines the type of neuromuscular (affecting the nerves and muscle) disability.

Five types of CP

There are 5 classifications of CP and I will list them followed by a brief explanation.

1. Dyskinetic CP also known as Athetoid CP: This accounts for approximately 20% of cases of CP. It is characterized by abnormal involuntary movement and may involve all the extremities as well as the face and neck. The movements increase with stress and anxiety.

2. Spastic CP: This accounts for approximately 50% of cases of CP. It is characterized by excessive tone in the voluntary muscles, hypertonic (rigid) muscles, exaggeration of deep tendon reflexes and contractures (shortening and hardening of muscles, tendons, or other tissue, often leading to deformity and rigidity of joints). In other words, exaggerated reflexes, floppy or rigid limbs, and involuntary motions.

3. Ataxic CP: This type of CP is characterized by a loss of coordination, loss of equilibrium (balance) and inability to control movement.

4. Rigid CP: This type of CP is relatively rare in children. It is characterized by rigidity in all muscles – flexors and extensors. In a child with tremors, the tremors are apparent at both rest and during movement.

5. Mixed CP: Those diagnosed with mixed CP have damage to the motor control centers in several parts of their brain.

Warning signs of CP

Identifying infants at risk for cerebral palsy includes looking for these warning signs.

Poor head control after 3 months of age.
Stiff or rigid arms or legs.
Pushing away or arching back.
Floppy or limp body posture.
Cannot sit up without support by 8 months.
Uses only one side of body, or only the arms to crawl.
Speech and swallowing impairment – gagging or choking when fed.

Persistence of extrusion reflex – thrust tongue forward after 6 months of age – usually disappears by 3-4 months of age.
Picture of spasticity – scissoring (legs crossed, toes pointed), fists clenched, forearm flexed, upper arm pressed against wall of chest, head extended and back arched.

How is CP diagnosed?

Cerebral palsy is diagnosed by your doctor using EEG, CT or MRI along with blood tests and a thorough neurologic examination. The EEG (electroencephalogram) is a test used to evaluate the electrical activity in the brain. The EEG results allow doctors to quickly assess whether there are abnormal patterns. Any irregularities may be a sign of seizures or other brain disorders. The computed tomography (CT or CAT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans allow your doctor to see bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body.

Persistent primitive reflexes (newborn reflexes), abnormal muscle tone and posture along with abnormal motor development are seen in a child with cerebral palsy. The goal of managing the child with CP is early recognition and intervention to maximize the child’s abilities.

Associated disabilities of CP

Approximately half of children with cerebral palsy have some degree of developmental delay and other disabilities. Epilepsy or seizure disorder is also among the problems associated with CP. Other than epilepsy, learning problems, poor attention span, hyperactivity, hearing or visual loss and emotional problems may also be seen. I believe that many of these emotional problems may be because of frustration in the inability to communicate his or her needs or wants.

Therapeutic management of CP

Cerebral palsy often is not diagnosed before the child is 2 years old. A multidisciplinary health care team approach is necessary to meet the many needs of the child with CP. This team includes the child and family, a pediatrician, neurologist, orthopedic surgeon, nurse, speech and hearing therapist, social worker, occupational therapist, physical therapist and educators.

All of these health care specialists work together with their treatments, therapies and medications to maximize the child’s quality of life and comfort. Of the many therapies a child with CP will receive, a communication device is an essential part of the plan of care. This device will not only be used in school, but will be part of the child’s daily life. He will not only learn how to communicate but can also play games for entertainment too. He will absolutely love this!

Speech and communication

An important part of recognizing CP in a child is paying attention to developmental milestones. Delay in reaching the milestones is one of the key indicators of cerebral palsy. School and community nurses are in the best position to work with families and children with CP. Many of these children will need both learning and physical adaptations as they enter school.

For the most part, children with CP are educated in the regular school program with assistive devices, such as the communication boards or computers. The communication board is a tool that the child will use for speech and communication.

Every expectant mother is faced with a question as she nears the time of her delivery. Do I breast or bottle-feed? Of course, I believe that most new moms-to-be have already decided that breast is best and so begin their search for breast pumps. The first feeding

The first feeding should take place within the first hour after birth if both mom and baby are stable. At this time, infants are alert and many begin to nurse at once. Others may nuzzle, lick or suck on and off at the breast which in turn will stimulate the production of milk. Feeding at this time also establishes early bonding.

Position of mother and infant

Both mother and infant should be positioned properly for optimal breastfeeding. An awkward position or pain may interfere with “let-down” – also known as milk ejection reflex. I will give you 3 positions that are best for breastfeeds.

1. Cradle hold. Position the baby with her head at the inside of your elbow and level with your nipple with your arm supporting the baby’s body. Use support pillows under your arm to prevent tiring.

2. Football hold. Support the baby’s head in your hand with the baby’s body resting on pillows alongside your hip.

This method allows you to see the position of your baby’s mouth on your breast, helps you control your baby’s head, and is especially helpful if you have heavy breasts.

3. Side-lying position. This position avoids pressure on any abdominal or perineal incisions and allows you to rest while breastfeeding. Lay on your side with your arm supporting the baby’s head or surrounding her head. Put a pillow behind your back and between your legs to provide comfort. Your upper hand and arm are used to position your infant on her side at nipple level and hold the breast. When the infant’s mouth opens, lean forward or draw the infant to you to insert the nipple into her mouth.

Latch-on techniques

There are techniques that you can use to help your infant “latch-on” to the breast. The infant should be awake and hungry. Talking and cuddling can help a sleepy baby awaken and also calm an upset infant. To elicit a latch-on, there are 2 methods recommended.

1. The palmar or “C” hand position. Hold your breast with your thumb on top and fingers against the chest wall and supporting the underside of the breast. Your fingers should be behind the areola and your thumb should not press on the breast enough to make the nipple tip upward or your infant will suck improperly and your nipple may become sore.

2. The scissors hold or “V” position. Use your forefinger and middle finger to support the breast. You must be careful to place your fingers well back on the breast so that your fingers do not slip down the wet areola and interfere with the placement of your infant’s mouth. Remember to support your breast in place if its weight makes it difficult for your infant to hold it in her mouth for the first few weeks.

Eliciting a latch-on

After positioning your baby to face the breast, hold your breast so that the nipple brushes against the center of your baby’s lower lip. A hungry infant usually opens her mouth as soon as anything comes near it, but some need up to 1 minute of stroking the area around the mouth. The breast should not be inserted until your baby’s mouth is opened wide or the baby will compress the end of the nipple causing pain and trauma and little milk flow.

The positioning of your infant’s mouth is critical to preventing painful, sore nipples with poor milk production. As much of the areola as possible should be in your infant’s mouth to allow the nipple to be drawn toward the back of the mouth. Your infant’s lips should be about 1 to 1.5 inches from the nipple base.

One more important detail. While your baby is feeding, gently pull the lower lip down. The tongue should be under the breast and over the top of the lower gums. The lips should be flared outward. Be sure that the lower lip is not turned in, which may result in a friction burn on the lower nipple.

Expressing your milk

When milk expression is needed, a breast pump in my opinion is your best method. Although some mothers may want to try hand expression, it is not as effective. Hand expression or breast pump expression is very useful for the mom who wants to save her breast milk for another feeding or whose areola is so engorged (filled to excess) that the baby cannot grasp it.

Most new parents coming home from the hospital after the birth of a new baby are a little nervous. What is it and how does it work?

Pediatrician recommended

My final thoughts

I remember when I had each of my children and waking up several times during the night checking on them to make sure they were breathing. Oh, if only I had such a great monitoring device it would have saved me some precious sleep. But that was then and this is now. It never ceases to amaze me how far we have come in the 21st century!

Type 1 Diabetes and Children

How do I know if my child has diabetes?

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or otherwise known as juvenile-onset diabetes is due to failure of the beta cells of the pancreas to produce insulin. The beta cells of the pancreas are a type of cell that makes insulin. Let me explain further.

The pancreas is an organ located in the abdomen (stomach area) and it plays an important role in converting the foods we eat into fuel or nutrition to the body’s cells.

The pancreas has two main functions:

1. Exocrine function which helps in digestion (it secretes a substance out through a duct) and,

2. Endocrine function (it secretes a hormone named insulin) to regulate blood sugar.

So, you might be asking yourself “how do I know if my child has diabetes?” and my goal is to walk you through the signs and symptoms to watch out for, how it’s diagnosed and how it is treated. I want to mention that this is by no means a medical advice type of article nor is it to be taken as medical advice. It is meant to be an aid or guide to help you make the correct decision to take your child to the doctor for medical advice and management.

Incidence

Approximately 97% of newly diagnosed juvenile diabetics have insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or type 1 diabetes. The age of onset is typically 11 years in girls and 13 years in boys. The age ranges of peak incidence are 5 to 7 years and puberty. Interestingly to note, that among preschool aged children, the disease is more commonly noted in boys. Among children diagnosed 5 to 10 years of age, the disease is more commonly diagnosed in girls. Here is another interesting note. This disease is diagnosed more often in the winter than in summer.

Signs and symptoms

The following signs and symptoms are classic signs of diabetes.

1. Excessive and large amounts of urinating.

2. Excessive thirst.

3. Excessive hunger.

4. Recent weight loss (during a period of less than 3 weeks).

5. Fatigue.

6. Headaches.

7. Yeast infections in girls.

8. Fruity breath odor.

9. Dehydration (usually 10% dehydrated).

10. Diabetic ketoacidosis (I will explain this later in this article as this deserves its own attention and is a medical emergency. This is not always a typical sign, but could occur unexpectantly).

11. Abdominal pain or belly pain.

12. Change in level of consciousness as result of the above symptoms not being addressed and progression of the disease.

Diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of symptoms combined with an elevated blood glucose (sugar) level [higher than 200mg/dl] and glucose or sugar in the urine.

Long term effects

The long term effects of hyperglycemia (a blood sugar level higher than 200) if left untreated, are very serious. I have made a list of these effects here:

1. Failure to grow at a normal rate and delayed maturing.

2. A nerve problem that causes pain, numbness, tingling, swelling, or muscle weakness in different parts of the body.

3. Recurrent infection.

4. Retinal disease of the eye (damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina).

5. Renal (pertaining to the kidney) micro vascular disease (complications that affect the small blood vessels of the kidneys).

6. Cardiovascular disease (damage to the blood vessels and nerves that control the heart and blood vessels).

7. Arterial obstruction (hardening or obstruction of the arteries throughout the body because of too much sugar, or glucose, building in the blood due to a lack of insulin.

Complications

There are several complications that result if a person is not medically treated for diabetes. It is imperative that you understand the seriousness of this disease no matter the age of the person. If treated adequately, diabetes can be controlled. It is within this section I will elaborate on the complication I mentioned above – diabetic ketoacidosis. Also, I will show you some of the other problems or complications that can arise.

If a child or adult does not receive treatment for their diabetes, any of the following complications can arise.

1. Coma (a deep state of prolonged unconsciousness).

2. Hypokalemia (blood potassium level is too low).

3. Hyperkalemia (blood potassium level is too high).

Note: Your blood potassium level is normally 3.6 to 5.2 millimoles per liter (mmol/L).

4. Osteopenia (loss of bone mass and weaker bones).

5. Limited joint mobility.

6. Thromboemboli [a blood clot that breaks loose and is carried by the blood stream to obstruct another blood vessel. The clot may obstruct a vessel in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), brain (stroke), gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, or leg].

7. Overwhelming infections.

Diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a serious condition in which the body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. This is caused by the body not producing enough insulin. The symptoms of this complication include the ones listed above for diabetes along with what we call Kussmaul respirations which are deep sighing respirations or breaths. The blood sugar level is higher than 300 mg/dl and there are moderate to large amounts of ketones in the urine. The pH of the blood becomes acidic, electrolytes become unbalanced and as a result can cause a life-threatening irregular heart beat. Coma can occur as a result of the electrolyte imbalance and the acidic level of the blood. Death can occur but is infrequent.

Diagnosis and treatment

If your child has any of the signs and symptoms for diabetes as listed in the first part of this article, make an appointment with your child’s doctor to have him or her evaluated. Do not delay or put it off. Having your child seen, diagnosed and treated right away will prevent the more serious complications of diabetes. The doctor will evaluate your child by doing thorough blood work and urinalysis. They will teach you how to check your child’s blood sugar levels with a device called a glucose monitor. Depending on the doctor’s orders, you will be checking the blood sugar anywhere from 2 to 4 times a day. Very rarely will you have to check it more than 4 times a day, but sometimes it can’t be avoided. It just depends on your child’s condition. The blood sugar level will determine the amount of insulin you’ll need to give. This is given by an injection on either the arm, stomach or thigh and you will rotate sites for each injection.

Diet and nutrition

The purpose of a dietary plan provides the necessary intake of calories for energy requirements and appropriate distribution of nutrients (carbs, fats and proteins). The American Diabetic Association (ADA) diet is designed specifically for diabetics and your doctor will involve a dietician or nutritionist to go over this diet plan with you. These types of diets are tailored to fit your individual nutritional needs.

Taking care of a child with type 1 diabetes

To manage diabetes in your child you will be taught by a nurse how to check your child’s blood sugar, give an insulin injection and you will be given an ADA diet for your child. It is usually recommended that your child should eat 4 to 6 small meals per day. You may be checking your child’s urine for glucose levels and may be checking for ketone levels, but this is if your doctor orders it. Sometimes it is not necessary. It depends on your child’s condition. Always check your child’s skin and feet. Encourage regular play and activities. It is important for your child’s self-esteem and emotional health. It is important to get involved with a support group for yourself and your child as it will help alleviate your concerns and you can find great strength as you meet other parents and children who are living with diabetes.

Wrapping it all up

If you find out that your child has type 1 diabetes, just know that it can be treated and controlled. You will learn a new way of life as well as your child and that is why I highly recommend becoming part of a good support group. Talk to your doctor about it and he or she can direct you to one. Adjusting to new dietary measures, watching blood sugar levels, insulin injections and skin care will become second nature to you and your child. Remember, there are a lot of people who have diabetes and you are not alone.

What’s in Baby Formula?

Breast or bottle?

This is the question that every new mother must ask herself as she nears the end of her pregnancy. It is a very important question and should be given much thought. Of course, I am of the mindset that breast is best. However, not all moms will be able to breast feed for any number of reasons which then leads to the next question. What’s in baby formula and which one is best for my baby?

Main types of infant formula

There are 4 main types of infant formulas:

Cow’s milk protein-based
Soy-based
Protein hydrolysate
Specialized formulas for premature infants and/or specific medical conditions

Cow’s milk protein-based formula

Cow’s milk infant formula consists of many proteins, carbohydrates and fats that baby needs for proper growth and development. Key ingredients include purified cow’s milk whey and casein (a slow-digesting dairy protein) – for protein; a blend of vegetable oils – for fats; lactose (a type of sugar) – for carbohydrates; a vitamin-mineral mix and other ingredients depending on the manufacturer.

Soy-based formula

If your baby has a milk protein allergy and you are unable to breast feed, there are options for infant formula that do not contain cow’s milk. Soy formula is made from soy protein. However, health care organizations don’t recommend its widespread use as it is considered to offer little nutritional advantage over cow’s milk formula. This is typically advised from your pediatrician due to your baby having a cow’s milk allergy, is lactose intolerant or a medical condition called galactosemia (an inherited condition that impairs the body’s ability to process and produce energy from a sugar called galactose). Always consult your doctor before choosing any infant formula including soy-based.

Protein hydrolysate formula

This is infant formula made for babies with digestive and immune issues. Hydrolyzed proteins are less allergenic for babies who are at risk for food allergies or immune diseases. This is a milk-based formula in which the milk proteins have been broken down into smaller components thereby minimizing the risk for allergic reaction.

Specialized formula

There are formulas made for premature babies which contain extra calories per ounce, more protein and higher levels of vitamins and minerals than formula meant for full term babies. There are formulas made for babies with specific medical conditions which contain higher levels of nutrients needed according to the specific need. Physicians usually prescribe or recommend this type of formula.

How long should a child drink infant formula?

It is recommended that your baby drink infant formula until age 1, followed by whole milk until age 2. You should always follow your doctor’s advice! This information is a general guide and is not meant to be medical advice. Again I say, always, always consult your doctor before making any decisions about your baby’s diet.

Take note that reduced fat or skim milk is not appropriate before age 2 because it does not have enough calories or fat to promote early brain development.

What infant formula preparations are available?

There are 3 different forms of infant formula.

1. Powdered formula (least expensive)

2. Concentrated liquid formula (middle of the road expensive)

3. Ready-to-use formula (most expensive)

Is there a difference between generic and brand-name formula?

The answer to this is all infant formulas must meet the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) nutrient standards. Manufacturers may vary in their recipes, but the FDA requires all formulas meet the minimum recommended amount of nutrients that infants need. There is very minimal difference between the generic and brand-name infant formulas.

Enhanced infant formula

There are infant formulas on the market that state they are “enhanced” formulas. This means that these formulas have fatty acids named docosahexaenoic (DHA) and arachidonic (ARA). I will explain a little further. DHA and ARA are omega-3 fatty acids found in breast milk and certain foods such as fish and eggs. Some studies suggest that including DHA and ARA can help infant eyesight and brain development.

Also, many infant formulas include pre- and probiotics which are substances that promote healthy bacteria in the intestines. Always ask your doctor for guidance!

The formula most hospitals use and trust

Similac infant formula has been on the market since 1925! To this day, most hospitals continue to use this infant formula for babies. Similac offers all the main types of infant formula covering every possible need for babies. It is a brand that I myself used with all 3 of my boys. I have attached some links for the best-sellers or most popular types of Similac formula in powder form. You will find that this formula mixes very easily with water. Here you will find formulas for pro-advance, or for hypo-allergenic (Similac Alimentum), and one for premature babies. There are other formulas for sensitivity, extra iron and one called Pure Bliss which is formulated very close to breast milk. I have attached the link for that one as well.

This is just a simplified overview of what’s in baby formula and is intended to give you a better idea of the different types that are available. It is not a complete list as there are many brands and types on the market. I personally used the Similac brand and found it to be the best. My mother used Similac for me and so you know, it has been around a long, long time. I feel most comfortable with products that have been around awhile as then you know it is good and time-tested!

What is organic baby food?

Organic baby food, a simple overview

When your baby reaches about 6 months of age, you will be starting to feed him pureed foods to supplement his formula. A lot of pediatricians (a doctor who specializes in the treatment of children) will recommend starting your baby with rice cereal and then progressing with pureed vegetables, meats and fruits. Organic baby food is by far the best to feed your baby as it has the least amount of pesticide residue on the food.

Organic foods are grown or processed without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Farmers or conventional growers use pesticides to protect their crops from molds, insects and diseases. When farmers spray pesticides, this can leave residue on produce. Organic produce carries significantly fewer pesticide residues than does conventional produce.

Babies and young children may be more susceptible to harm potentially caused by pesticides than adults.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed. To see whether a food is organic, check the label.

The USDA has guidelines on how organic foods are described on product labels:

100 percent organic. This description is used on certified organic fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat or other single-ingredient foods. It may also be used on multi-ingredient foods if all the ingredients are certified organic, excluding salt and water. These may have a USDA seal.
Organic. If a multi-ingredient food is labeled organic, at least 95 percent of the ingredients are certified organic, excluding salt and water. The non organic items must be from a USDA list of approved additional ingredients. These also may have a USDA seal.
Made with organic. If a multi-ingredient product has at least 70 percent certified organic ingredients, it may have a “made with organic” ingredients label. For example, a breakfast cereal might be labeled “made with organic oats.” The ingredient list must identify what ingredients are organic. These products may not carry a USDA seal.

Organic ingredients. If less than 70 percent of a multi-ingredient product is certified organic, it may not be labeled as organic or carry a USDA seal. The ingredient list can indicate which ingredients are organic.”

Is organic and natural the same thing?

When a food label says it is “natural”, it means that there are no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. It does not refer to the methods or materials used to produce the food ingredients.

When a food label says it is “organic”, it means it follows the guidelines as mentioned above.

Organic and natural are not the same.

Preparing or purchasing organic baby food

If you are a stay at home mom, you may want to buy your fresh produce in the organic section of the market, and puree the fruits, vegetables and meat yourself. Find the meat in the meat section and look for the organic labels or Amish labels as the Amish use no antibiotics or pesticides on their livestock or crops.

Preparing and pureeing is always the best option if you are able to do it and have the time. But for most moms, that is not always the case. In most households both mom and dad work full-time jobs, so being able to prepare the food will be a problem. Fortunately, you can purchase organic baby food from the store or online shopping.

Potential benefits of organic foods

There have been studies that show there are small to moderate increases of nutrients in the organic foods. There is less toxic metal and less pesticide residue. With regard to meat, the feeding requirements for organic livestock farming, such as the primary use of grass and alfalfa for cattle, result in generally higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a kind of fat that is more heart healthy than other fats. These higher omega-3 fatty acids are found in organic meats, dairy and eggs.

Drawbacks of organic baby food

Organic baby food can be a little more expensive than regular baby food. Other than the expense, there are really no other drawbacks to this baby food. The benefits definitely outweigh the drawbacks. I always prefer to have products that are labeled natural and/or organic. I want to feed the best food to my family and grandson.

The size charts for a baby’s shoes generally show measurements that allow room for the growth of a baby’s foot. For example, a size 3 for age 6-9 months will be slightly large on your baby’s foot to accommodate growth.

For an older child, when you put the shoe on his foot while standing, there should be between 1/4 and 1/2 inch between the tip of the big toe and the edge of the shoe. Sizing is important as you do not want them too big or too small.
