Have you ever asked yourself this question? (fill in the blank for the age of the baby you are looking for toys): “What in the world do I buy for a baby who is 3 months old, 4 months old, 5 months old or 6 months old?” This seems to be a universal question especially when the holidays are gaining on us or a birthday celebration. After doing much research on this same question when my grandson arrived, I want to share some tips on what to look for in toys. In this blog, I will give some recommendations along with the developmental benefits that will greatly enrich your little’s learning and advancement. I will share what I believe to be the 3 best developmental toys for babies 3 to 6 months of age.
3 to 4 month old baby
When I look for toys for my grandson, I look for toys that are colorful, bright, educational and most of all FUN! Babies learn best at this stage when they can become actively engaged. For instance, when you are sitting with them talking, singing and playing with them you have gotten their attention and you will start seeing wonderful reactions such as coos, giggles and kicking. There is nothing in this world more cute than a baby’s laughter.
Not all babies grow and develop at the same rate. Each one is unique equipped with his or her own personality, learning ability and growth rate. You do want to follow your pediatrician’s recommendations at all times and follow up regularly. Putting on my grandmother’s hat now, I say, love, love, love your baby each and every day! Always tell them you love them and always listen to them no matter what they want to talk about. If it is important to them, it should be important to you!
Now let’s get back to talking about toys. Like I said earlier, after much research this is what I found to be a great educational, bright, engaging and FUN toy. This toy made by Baby Einstein, 4-in-1 Kickin’ Tunes Music and Language Discovery Gym, has a tap and play piano, language discovery, multi-sensory toys and prop pillow. Your baby will love tummy time and back time on this play mat. It is a great way for you to interact with your child. It has bright colorful toys and music. And, I must say that babies love music!
Speaking of music, it has a piano which tells you shapes, animals, colors, numbers etc in English, Spanish and French! It is amazing and very stimulating for baby. Actually, I love it too and love that I can learn a new language myself! Or, at least a few new words. Take a look below as I have attached a link for you in case you’re interested in this product.

4 to 5 month old baby
So at this stage of your baby’s growth and development, he is sitting up and able to explore his surroundings. This is a really fun age as now he can respond to you and laugh. All the while he is learning at a rapid rate. This is just before your baby discovers he can begin to move about via hands, arms and legs. You guessed it – crawling! You better beware mommy, baby is getting ready for mobilization really soon. Don’t forget to prepare for baby-proofing the house. In a later post I will talk about the things you are going to need to make your home baby-safe. But for now, we will focus on the best toys for your baby for maximum learning and growth. First on my list for a 5-month-old is an activity center such as the Skip Hop Silver Lining Cloud Activity Center. This has 25+ developmental activities, four movable toys, a musical light-up piano and a foot support platform which adjusts for your baby’s growth. Your baby can spin in his seat to play with each activity and as he grows older it will allow him to stand. Your baby will love the music and the lights. This will definitely keep your little one entertained and strengthen his learning skills. I’ve attached the link below for you to check it out.

5 to 6 month old baby
When you’re baby reaches 5 months of age, he may still need some propping up with a pillow to sit or he may be able to sit unsupported for a few seconds at a time. At 6 months old your baby may then start crawling. Remember that some babies skip crawling altogether and just start to pull himself up on furniture and start the beginning stages of walking. It just depends on every little one as each of them are so unique. There is no set rule for when your baby will begin these milestones. So be patient, your baby will achieve these milestones sooner or later.
Here is an activity center I found to be very intriguing for your little one. He can crawl around in it and explore the sights and sounds. It is the Little Tikes Activity Garden and it has a wonderful blend of learning activities. In this Activity Garden your baby will find a Tap-a-Tune piano, crawl-through obstacle course, movable telescope, mirror, learning clock and more. These activities will help develop your baby’s fine motor skills. For this activity center, please see below.

Another great toy I found which is great for stimulating your little one’s interest and for helping them to walk is the Vtech Stroll & Discover Activity Walker. This activity walker is stated as for 9 months however you may be able to use it for your 6-month-old if he is pulling himself up on furniture. This activity walker has lots of learning activities and is fun for your baby. Such as five light-up piano key buttons that introduce shapes and numbers in learning mode and play music notes and melodies in music mode. It has three colorful shape sorters, removable cell phone and spinning gears. This is a great activity walker in so many ways and it aids your baby for walking. I found a great deal at Amazon, see below.
